Bristol, CT: Kenny Chesney's taken batting practice with the Boston Red Sox, been drafted - and cut - by the New Orleans Saints, but by far his most full-contact sports activity is getting in the trenches with ESPN Radio/ESPN-2's “Mike and Mike in the Morning,” the freewheeling talk show helmed by a noted sportswriter (Mike Greenberg) and a former Notre Dame/Houston Oiler-Miami Dolphin-Philadelphia Eagle defensive lineman (Mike Golic). As the no-holds-barred, no out-of-bounds team releases Mike and Mike's Rules for Sports & Life April 6, Chesney figured it was about time to check in with the two guys he's not seen since the Super Bowl.
“Mike and Mike keep it so real,” Chesney says of the duo. “They have the most unique take: one of not just an ultimate fan, but as a journalist, he's got that analytic thing down - and the other, having been on the field, on the bench and in the practices and meetings, he knows what the pressures are like when you're making it happen. So, they really put you inside what's going on.”
Chesney's interest in the book is a little more than enjoying the read. The 4-consecutive Academy of Country Music and 4-time Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year was tapped by Mike and Mike to write the preface for Rules for Sports & Life, a task which matched him with noted columnist George Will. For the lifetime sports fan, it not only got Chesney out of his wheelhouse, it gave him a different take on what goes into telling the story.
“When they asked me, I thought it'd be fun,” Chesney offers. “But I took it - like everything I do - serious, and it's a lot more work than you'd guess. I can say, though, I got to read their book last year laugh at their anecdotes, see their camaraderie on the page and take away some funny stories and some decent life lessons. Anyone who's a fan of the show is gonna love it - if they can get past the preface.”
The high energy singer/songwriter from East Tennessee has spent the last several months outside his comfort zone.
